Communication standards need to be open not closed. Basically imagine if only your electric company sold appliances that worked in your home. Microsoft was very clever establishing the default computer standard by giving away software standards to companies who agreed to work with them, maintaining compatibility, and maintaining a monopoly. Apple and "AT&T" are doing the same thing here.
